why in harry potter chamber of secrets does draco rip a page out of a book in the bookstore?
that puzzles me. it is when harry & his friends are leaving the book store. draco is upstairs & rips a page out of book. it is never mentioned or shows any meaning. also when harry & ron turn into grabbie & goyle, draco picks up a box & asks is this yours. what was in the box & what meaning did it have?
Draco tearing a page out of a book in Flourish and Blotts was probably only meant to show his disregard for other people and their property, but I think it could have more significance. If it were merely an act of vandalism he would’ve only damaged the book, but he folded the page and slipped it into his robes. The Malfoys are a wealthy family and Draco’s parents indulged him with expensive gifts (like his top of the line Nimbus 2001 and regular deliveries of Honeydukes sweets) so I’m sure that he had a generous allowance. But, if money wasn’t the issue, why resort to theft? I think it was because the page contained information that Draco didn’t want other people to know he had. When Draco was first shown in the shop he was standing directly above Lockheart who was making a speech about his new book. If you notice when the camera turns up to show Draco a "Dark Arts" sign is displayed there. So, I think he’d been looking through a Dark Arts book while waiting for Harry to leave the bookstore and tore out the page before he confronted him. If he’d just bought the book people (his parents, the clerk who sold it and other shoppers) would know he had it. But by stealing it, he still got it without making anyone suspicious. I’d bet it just expained some new jinx, hex, or curse that he would later try out on Neville, like he did in the first movie, or one he could save for a duel with Harry. As for the box that Draco helped himself to in the Slytherin Common Room, we don’t know what it contained, I think the meaning was only to reinforce the idea that Draco has a sense of entitlement and a blatant disregard for other people’s feelings and property. I doubt that the item was of any real importance, probably a gift from home or a friend. Since neither scene were in the book I think both were meant to establish Draco’s character, nothing more.

vandalism

I think it’s pretty much to show how much of a jerk he is that he would do something like that, so disrespectful. I mean, who does that? Other people are going to read those books!
Like Marley said, Vandalism.

he is either stealing the contents… or more likely - ruining the book for whoever buys it
the box has no significance except to show his disrespect for others

Read the book, and if you don’t enjoy reading go to your local library and rent the audio book and listen to it. It will explain a lot of things in the book that the movie did or didn’t do.

If it’s from the movies then it’s probably meaningless or just for entertainment. I don’t remember reading that part in the books.

I’m pretty sure book pages regenerate because even Hermione tore out the page about the basilisk. I think he just did it for no real reason. Also, the box in the common room was someone’s Christmas gift and he just plain stole it for the heck of it.

I don’t think it was in the book. just in the movie. Either it could show, as people said Vandalism or just a pointless scene in the movie*
* they don’t live up to the books
